Guide Book Introduction | Australia | New South Wales | Northern Territory
Queensland | Tasmania | Victoria | Western Australia | General Handbooks

A list of every guide book I know of that includes overnight walks.

A Walking Guide to the Northern Flinders Ranges (1st edition), by Adrian Heard, published by State Publishing, 1990, ISBN 0 7243 6574 5. An excellent book, describing 3 circuit walks of around one weeks length in the Gammon Ranges and briefer notes to the Arkoroola Sanctuary area. Recommended if you are planning a long walk in the Gammon Ranges. Probably out of print and price currently unknown. An alternative is Bushwalking In Australia as it describes one long circuit in the Gammon Ranges.

Flinders Ranges Walks (2nd edition), by Peter Beer, published by Federation of South Australian Walking Clubs, 1997, ISBN 0 9593862 1 1. A thin book of 64 pages with brief descriptions of walks to Mt Remarkable, Telowie Gorge, Wilpena Pound and Gammon Ranges. Most of the notes are aimed at one day walks and a brief suggestion of overnight walks is provided for each park. Price is around A$10.

Car Touring and Bushwalking in the Southern Flinders Ranges (1st edition), by Grant Da Costa, published by Acacia Vines, 1998, ISBN 0 9585478 0 7. A well researched guide of 144 pages - mainly describes car tours and one day walks in the Flinders Ranges. There are a couple of overnight walk suggestions hidden within its pages but these walks are also the same as those described in more detail in other guides. It's strongest value is the description of one day walks to places not in other books. Price is around A$22.

Walking The Flinders Ranges (reprint), by Warren Bonython, published by Royal Geographical Society of South Australia, reprint 2000. The most famous trip account in Australia. It describes Warrens original 74 day traverse of the Flinders Ranges and set a standard in bushwalking writing. Was only available for many years in some libraries and the reprint fills a needed void. Price is around A$30.

50 Walks in South Australia (1st edition), by Tyrone Thomas, published by Hill of Content, 1992. Primarily describes one day walks around the state. It does include 5 overnight walks but as 2 are very similar I would regard it as 4 different overnight walks. Price is around A$16.

Trailmaster Guide to the Heysen Trail. A series of small 16 page booklets to the trail. Currently 2 booklets exist to the southern end of the trail. Includes very brief navigation notes, access notes and campsites and accommodation. Each booklet costs A$5.

The Heysen Trail - A Walkers Guide, Volume One - Tanunda to Cape Jervis, by Terry Lavender, published by Bookends Books, 1999, ISBN 1 87672 500 1. Describes the south end of the Heysen Trail with interesting asides and historical notes. While good on track detail it lacks campsite information and the fanciful claim at the end that this is the worlds longest footpath is simply incorrect. Price is around A$22.
